The garden is waking up and there are so many chores to do. There’s nothing more disheartening than seeing a large, lovely, lush peony bush splayed out and flopping all over the place. There are quite a few products on the market designed to help cage and support peonies but I’ve found that homemade cement wire cages work really well. And if you’re like most Southern gardeners, you’ve probably already got a roll of cement wire in your garden shed for making tomato cages.
I just roll it out and cut it to the desired height. Five or six squares high seems to be what most of my mature peonies need. I add a twine grid on top to keep the flowers from swaying this way and that way. By the time the garden fills in, the cages are completely disguised by the plant. These work well on Annabelle hydrangea too!
Of course you could just cut them all and enjoy them inside too!
